Civilian Training - How To Create A Positive Work Environment This course is restricted to MSHP Civilian Employees only:

This course is designed to help improve the work environment. Topics include promoting positive interactions by maintaining positive attitudes, the practice of regularly recognizing the contributions of coworkers, and developing a vision of how to improve the work experience for all.

This is a two hour course that will start at 1000 hours. Lunch will be provided at the MSHP Cafeteria.

There is an afternoon session on "Overcoming Communication Obstacles" that is also available for enrollment.

Civilian Training - Overcoming Communication Obstacles This course is restricted to MSHP Civilian Employees only:

This course will discuss obstacles that interfere with the process of communication and how to overcome those obstacles. Effective listening skills will be presented. Students will be taught ways to overcome a breakdown in communication at the workplace. Other topics will include how to give feedback and ask better questions. The course will also address ways to avoid using negative body language.

This is a two hour course that will start at 1300 hours. Lunch will be provided at the MSHP Cafeteria.

There is a morning session on "How to Create a Positive Work Environment" that is also available for enrollment.

Crash Investigation Programs - Advanced Crash Investigation Prerequisite:  The successful completion of Basic Crash Investigation or an equivalent course.

Course Description:  This school is an intense two-week course which focuses on the development of the student's skills in gathering evidence at the scene of a crash and the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics.  The concepts of time, distance, and the conservation of momentum are covered in detail.

Advanced Crash Investigation provides the student with investigative techniques in technical areas including obtaining drag factors; photographing the crash scene; and working with formulas to determine speed estimates from skids, scruffs, falls, and vaults.  The student will also learn how to prepare scale diagrams and develop field survey techniques for determining intersection angles, slopes, grades, and curve radii.

Who Should Attend:  This course is designed for peace officers and individuals responsible for investigating motor vehicle crashes.

Crash Investigation Programs - Basic Crash Investigation Prerequisite:  A basic understanding of algebraic functions is required to work the formulas taught.

Course Description:  This Basic Crash Investigation School is designed to give the student the necessary skills to conduct a traffic crash investigation.  The course features instruction in the collection and preservation of evidence, speed calculations from skid marks, field sketching, and diagramming.  Special emphasis is placed on the use of the traffic template, determination of drag factors, minimum speed and combined speed formulas, analysis of physical facts of the collision, and marks left on the roadway.  This course will assist the student in formulating accurate opinions on how the crash occurred.

The instructors will provide training to the students through lectures and field exercises which demonstrate practical applications of the course material.  Basic Crash Investigation gives the student the foundation to advance to more technical levels of crash investigation.

Crash Investigation Programs - Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigation Prerequisite:  The successful completion of an advanced crash investigation course.

Course Description:  This course is intended for the crash investigator with little or no knowledge in commercial vehicle nomenclature.  Detailed mathematical problems will be presented in dealing with commercial motor vehicle crashes.

Course topics will include tractor-trailer nomenclature, types of tractor-trailer combinations, brake systems, brake inspection, trailer coupling devices, log books, complete vehicle inspection, jackknifing, off-tracking, hydroplaning, rollover, vehicle dynamics in braking, weight shift, practical exercises inspections, and vehicle testing.  The instructors provide training to students through lectures and field exercises which demonstrate commercial vehicle dynamics, braking capabilities and skidmarks, and equipment.

Crash Investigation Programs - Crash Reconstruction Prerequisite:  The successful completion of an advanced crash investigation course.

Course Description:  Many trained peace officers have difficulty getting their crash investigation findings admitted into court.  This course is designed to help overcome this difficulty by enabling a well-trained peace officer to qualify as an expert and give expert testimony in a court of law relative to the causation factors in motor vehicle traffic crashes.  Crash reconstruction instructors provide training to students through lectures, projects, and in-depth analysis of actual collisions.  A student who successfully completes this course will be able to give expert testimony in the following areas:

• Speed of vehicles at impact using conservation of linear momentum.
• Behavior of vehicles in a collision using Newton's three laws of motion.
• The effect of weight shift in braking involving large trucks and buses, including truck-tractor/semi-trailer combinations.
• The effect of anti-skid braking systems in stopping distances and braking action.
• The determination of direction of travel, initial contact, and position of vehicles on the roadway through the interpretation of vehicles damage and the analysis of at-scene marks and evidence.

Crash Investigation Programs - Crash Reconstruction Retraining Prerequisite:  The successful completion of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Crash Reconstruction School or an Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) Crash Reconstruction School.

Course Description:  This course is designed to cover the latest trends and technology in the field of crash reconstruction.  The curriculum will include topics covered in the most recent Problems in Crash Reconstruction Seminar held at the IPTM, Jacksonville, Florida, and requested topics from Missouri State Highway Patrol crash reconstructionist.  The school is structured to sharpen the student's skills in the field of crash reconstruction.  There will be extensive review of currently used mathematical formulas in the field of traffic crash reconstruction.

Who Should Attend:  Any crash reconstructionist who meets the course prerequisite and wants to stay abreast of current developments in this field or sharpen previously learned skills.

Crash Investigation Programs - Heavy Vehicle Reconstruction Techniques This 5 day block of training is designed for the advanced technical investigator
and/or collision reconstructionist seeking to understand the advanced techniques
needed for reconstructing heavy vehicle collisions. Upon conclusion of the class, the
student should be able to evaluate a heavy vehicle's ability to stop, reconstruct a
heavy vehicle's axle weight, calculate a dynamic vehicle rollover threshold,
interpret extracted data from Heavy Vehicle Event Data Recorders and telematic
systems, and follow the proper procedures for post crash inspections. Completion
of this class will also better prepare the student to be successful in courtroom
presentations.

Criminal Investigation Programs - Basic Narcotics Investigation Prerequisite:  Applicants must be commissioned peace officers.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol reserves the right to refuse applications.

Course Description:  Veteran narcotics/vice investigators will present an overview of narcotics investigations and undercover operations.  Topics will include drug identification, investigative techniques commonly used in narcotics/vice investigations, several aspects of federal investigations, as well as drug and case law to assist officers in the field and in the courtroom.  The Missouri National Guard R.A.I.D. Counter Drug Operations will provide an orientation on the services they can provide.  Officers will also receive basic guidance in undercover investigations and in the development, use, and control of confidential informants.

Who Should Attend:  Criminal investigators, narcotics/vice investigators, officers interested in a career development program in narcotics or vice.  This course is a mandatory pre-requisite to the Advanced Narcotics Investigation Course for Missouri State Highway Patrol Narcotics Officers and Task Force Officers in Patrol coordinated task forces.

Criminal Investigation Programs - Crime Scene Investigation Prerequisite: Basic Law Enforcement Training,

Course Description: The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control hosts this training at the Academy.  This course consists of classroom lecture and practical application training. Numerous forensic disciplines will be discussed, to include latent fingerprint identification and recovery, body fluid detection, DNA evidence, firearms/trace/toolmark evidence, casting impressions, and other related disciplines.  The course also includes instruction in crime scene management, crime scene diagramming, legal issues, crime scene photography, and camera functionality.

Course Instructors: Classes are instructed by members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control, and Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory personnel.

Who Should Attend: Criminal investigators, detectives, or officers charged with the duty of processing crime scenes.

Required Materials: Significant portions of the training will include elements of photography. Students should arrive with at minimum:
• A DSLR (or mirrorless) camera with standard lens
• Tripod
• Flashlight
• Weather appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor classes

*A limited amount of loaner cameras and equipment will be available*

Other helpful, but not required camera equipment includes:
• An external flash and sync cord/cable
• Macro lens (50mm)
• Extra batteries.  
• A USB drive or computer for electronic course material handouts.

Criminal Investigation Programs - Criminal Investigation School Prerequisite:  Basic Law Enforcement Training

Course Description:  The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control host this training at the Academy.  The program provides in-depth instruction in the process and techniques that apply to all aspects of criminal investigation.  Topics include crime scene investigation, sex crimes investigations, digital forensics, child abuse investigation, death investigation, investigative resources, legal aspects, interview and interrogation, and case management.

Course Instructors:  Classes are instructed by numerous experts to include Captain Everett Babcock of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department; Randolph County, Missouri Prosecuting Attorney Stephanie Luntsford; STAT (State Technical Assistance Team) Investigations Manager Kimberly Grebner; Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab Director Brian Hoey; Corporal Patrick Sublette of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Digital Forensics Investigative Unit; Captain Steven Wilhoit and Scott Rawson of the Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control.

Who Should Attend:  Recently assigned investigative officers and officers from smaller departments that require an officer to manage criminal investigations from beginning to end.  Patrol officers involved with, or interested in, criminal investigation should also attend.

Criminal Investigation Programs - Criminal Patrol Prerequisite:  MSHP members who focus their self-initiated activity on making drug and other criminal arrests.

Course Description:  This 30-hour course is designed for any member who conducts roadside investigations.  

Criminal patrol strategies relate directly to the primary purpose of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to enforce traffic laws and promote safety upon the highways.  Criminal interdiction strategies such as the mindset of the officer, different methods of criminal patrol enforcement, as well as vehicle selection will be covered.  Additionally, training will be provided covering the practical application of conducting a traffic stop and searching the vehicle as well as additional follow up and court preparation.

Who Should Attend:  Members who are assigned to road duties.

Criminal Investigation Programs - Interview and Interrogation Prerequisite: None

Course Description:  This course is designed for law enforcement professionals who conduct interviews during their professional assignments.  

The ability to conduct effective interviews and interrogations is a critical part of every successful criminal investigation.  There is no evidence more incriminating in court than a confession to the crime by the suspect.  This course will provide professional training of interview and interrogation techniques used by experienced Criminal and Narcotic Investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.  The instructors are experienced law enforcement interviewers and instructors, who will teach proven techniques and methods they use while conducting criminal investigations.  Participants will also learn the shortcomings of ineffective and outdated techniques that are currently being taught or were taught in the past.

2025 Interview and Interrogation MSHP Law Enforcement Academy 04/28/2025 - 05/02/2025
Human Resources - Strive for Excellence Training Series Session 2 will be held on 03/26/2024 at 1400 hours.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a framework of training, coaching and conversation designed to bring together all aspects of the Patrol into one Webex platform.  The goal is to provide guidance and support to Lieutenants/Managers/Supervisors by discussing topics that aid in the successful performance of their leadership role. Staff who are not new to their position can utilize these sessions to update their skills and knowledge in particular areas of interest. Sessions will be recorded; therefore, applicable training can also be recommended to necessary personnel to be self-assigned through ACADIS once posted. (Sessions should be available within 2 weeks of recorded date)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: The Strive for Excellence Training Series is designed for the newly promoted lieutenant or manager, or be a promotable sergeant or higher, or in an equivalent position. Sessions can also be recommended to personnel who may benefit from skills or knowledge the topic(s) provides.  

STRIVE for FIVE: Each session will end with 5 tools-tips-tricks to make your life as a manager easier. These 5 items are meant to be quick and simple, but all resources you can use in one way or another to improve the service we provide as an agency, or even ideas to boost your mental health.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning and end of the session. Certificates will be made available for those who complete the entire course.

Instructor Development Programs - EVOC Instructor Course Prerequisite:  Successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) training.  A certificate of completion must be included with the application form before the student will be enrolled in the class.  A desire to teach emergency vehicle operations.

Course Description:  After demonstrating proficiency in defensive driving and crash avoidance techniques, the student will be required to demonstrate an ability to teach the same techniques during student teaching exercises.  Successful completion of this training program will provide students with the necessary qualifications to instruct in the basic peace officer training programs and is recognized by POST as an approved secondary license in the area of driver training.

Who Should Attend:  Department driver training instructors or future instructors.

NOTE - MSHP members must contact Cpl. Tye Decramer BEFORE enrolling in this course.  Cpl. Decramer will discuss expectations and will make a final determination before member application before students are enrolled.  This does NOT apply to outside agency students.

2025 Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) Instructor MSHP - EVOC Track 04/14/2025 - 04/18/2025
Instructor Development Programs - Firearms Instructor Prerequisite:  This is an intensive two-week course designed for experienced shooters and career law enforcement personnel who will be tasked as firearms instructors for their respective agencies.  Marginal shooters should not apply for this school.  This course is not designed to teach an officer how to shoot, but rather how to instruct others to shoot.  It should be noted that this is a physically demanding course requiring running, jumping, calisthenics, and shooting from various positions, not limited to only standing, kneeling, and prone.

Students will be required to fire a handgun pre-qualification test on the first day of training.  A minimum score of 80% on the qualification is required for the student to be accepted into the Firearms Instructor School.  Chief executive officers of attending students are requested to ensure those students can meet the minimum qualifications.  In order to obtain an instructor certificate, students must have a minimum score of 90% on each testing phase (handgun qualification, shotgun qualification, rifle qualification and final written examination).  Students failing to successfully meet the standards will receive a certificate of completion only, and will not receive an instructor certification.  Prospective students can contact the Academy to obtain a copy of both the handgun, rifle and shotgun qualification courses of fire.

NOTE:  Students exhibiting unsafe firearms handling during the course will be requested to leave.

Course Description:   This is an advanced course that includes instruction on preparing written lesson plans for departmental firing courses, role of the instructor, methods of instruction, firearms liability, firearms/range safety, range procedures, target analysis, indoor handgun qualification, fundamentals of teaching shotgun, outdoor tactical pistol, rifle and shotgun range exercises/qualification, outdoor tactical handgun, rifle and shotgun courses, and student teaching exercises.  

Who Should Attend:  Departmentally designated firearms instructors.

Instructor Development Programs - NASBLA BUI SFST Train-the-Trainer Course Overview
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) has been conducting Boating Under the Influence (BUI) courses since 2004. Statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard show that the percentage of boating accidents, injuries and fatalities caused by alcohol - those in which alcohol was reported as a contributing factor - has remained constant over the past several years. Along with promoting greater awareness of the dangers of drinking and boating, NASBLA believes that the best way to reduce BUI is to strengthen law enforcement capabilities
on the water. With that in mind, NASBLA has worked with its state and federal members/partners in the development of the BUI training courses. NASBLA's Boating Under the Influence Enforcement / Seated SFST Trainer Development Program is a 24-hour course. This Train-the-Trainer course will prepare the professional, agency-sponsored trainer with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver the NASBLA curricula within his or her agency and to marine law
enforcement partners. The course will focus on the following areas:
1. Facilitating officers in detecting and deterring BUI violations
2. Teaching laws relative to BUI enforcement
3. Explaining the three phases of BUI detection
4. Discussion of research and validation of standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs)
5. Teaching concepts and principles of horizontal gaze nystagmus
6. Delivering the seated battery of SFSTs
7. Demonstrations and student practice of the seated battery of SFSTs
8. Review of the standing battery of SFSTs
9. Evaluation of test subjects; alcohol workshop video
10. Logistical issues in BUI enforcement
11. Evaluation of test subjects; live alcohol workshop
12. Processing the arrested subject and preparation for trial

The cost of the class is covered by a grant. The student/agency will be responsible for meals and lodging, if needed. MSHP Academy also offers lodging for $45.00/night, this can be requested during registration by completing the lodging portion of the registration.

Instructor Development Programs - PhaseLine X Defensive Tactics Instructor Course Prerequisite: Commissioned Police Officers with Defensive Tactics experience

Course Description: This course is taught by renowned Jiu Jitsu instructor Todd Fox and designed to develop and enhance defensive tactics instruction methods and capabilities of previously certified defensive tactics instructors.  Students will review the most current associated legal considerations and then examine, discuss, and physically apply concepts and techniques addressing law enforcement’s legal use of force, while acting under the color of law, against armed and unarmed individuals presenting defensive resistance and active aggression.  The DT topics will include standing techniques, ground fighting, weapon retention, cuffing position(s) control techniques, use of force scenarios, teach backs, written tests, and practical testing.

Who Should Attend:  Current defensive tactics instructors or officers who have a background in defensive tactics.  Officers must be able to perform strenuous physical activity to complete this class.

Please wear appropriate attire that complies with the MSHP Academy standards for the classroom portion of training on Monday morning. Mat room attire should be in alignment with physical training clothing and may be long or short sleeve shirts and pants or shorts. Rash guards are acceptable for the mat room.

Instructor Development Programs - Police Instructor School Prerequisite:  Basic computer skills

Course Description:  This intense, hands-on course is designed to develop both the technical skills required to become a police instructor and the confidence needed to properly instruct a class.  This course is certified by POST.

The course objectives of this one-week school are:

• Assist police instructors in understanding and improving their use of techniques and methods of effective instruction;

• Create an awareness and appreciation of the role of police instructors and enable students to recognize the factors which influence learning;

• Develop the instructor's skill in communicating with students;

• Increase the police instructor's efficiency by providing them with knowledge which will enable them to research a subject, define the objectives, organize lessons while selecting the proper methods for presentation, and develop skills in presenting a topic before a class;

• Develop an ability to construct tests that are both valid and reliable in evaluating student progress.

Who Should Attend:  This course is designed for, but not limited to, instructors who do not already have extensive classroom experience.  Part-time and full-time instructors will gain knowledge and confidence from the course.  Each student will present several short (one- to ten-minute) lessons and a one-hour lesson to fellow classmates and instructors.  Students are encouraged to bring laptop computers if they have one available.

Course Description:  This program provides the student with the fundamental knowledge base from which to conduct police traffic radar and/or laser operator courses.  Topics include basic concepts of stationary, moving, and same-direction moving radar; general fundamentals of laser operation; practical radar and laser operation; device testing requirements; and legal aspects of radar and laser operation.  This course is designed to meet the requirements of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for radar and laser instruction programs.  Participants should bring a laser and radar unit, if possible, and must have a minimal working knowledge of the instruments.  Upon successful completion of this course, each student will be presented with a Radar/Laser Instructor Certificate.

Instructor Development Programs - Standardized Field Sobriety Testing - Instructor Course Prerequisite for SFST Instructors:  Any person who desires to become an instructor in the SFST program shall have licensure as a peace officer from the Peace Officer Standards and Training program; have a minimum of seventy-five (75) DWI arrests; hold a current/valid permit issued by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for one or more of the Missouri approved breath alcohol instruments; and provide a resume outlining education and law enforcement history.  Candidate must also show proficiency in administering the SFST battery in front of an SFST Instructor Trainer prior to completing the course.  Candidate will be given two (2) attempts to satisfactorily complete the battery.  Students will not be taught how to perform the SFST battery, but rather how to teach others.  The SFST Technical Panel will review and select all applicants for the school.  

Course Description:  This is a "train-the-trainer" course.  Topics include concepts of adult learning and teaching and the SFST curriculum package.  This training complies with the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Students must pass both a teaching practicum (pass/fail) and a written examination (80%) to fulfill graduation requirements.  Graduates will be qualified to conduct SFST training and given the resources necessary to do so.

The Police Leadership the West Point Model (PLWM) leadership development training program is based on a behavioral science approach to leading people, groups, change, and organizations.  This three-week course provides the opportunity for law enforcement and public safety personnel to train together in the classroom.  The original course material was developed and taught for many years at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  Through years of research and development, the curriculum was specifically tailored to meet the challenges and needs of the law enforcement community.

The course focus is the systematic development of leaders at all levels of an organization - the concept of "every officer is a leader."  Besides teaching people how to lead individuals, the PLWM course coaches people on how to lead groups, organizations, and efforts toward change.  The PLWM course attendees study these dynamics to become adept at making groups cohesive and better able to reach organizational goals.  This knowledge acquired by participants about themselves and others has enhanced relationships both on and off the job, making a profound, life-changing impact on many course graduates.  In the 21st century, police organizations can no longer rely on an individual or small group of leaders.

Technical Programs - Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement Prerequisite:  Students should be familiar with the extent of the drug impaired driving problem, must have successfully completed the basic Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) course, and attended a recent SFST refresher or update course.

Course Description:  This is an intermediate level course designed to offer more than a basic understanding of the impairing effects of drugs (illicit and licit), alcohol, and/or the combination of both.  The officer must be able to administer and interpret the horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test for alcohol-impaired suspects, and be proficient in the administration and evaluation of the battery of tests involved with SFST.  The officer will be required to pass an SFST proficiency examination the first day of training.

The student who successfully completes this training will be able to recognize that an individual may be under the influence of a drug or drugs other than alcohol, or under the combined influence of alcohol and other drugs, or suffering from some injury or illness that produces signs similar to alcohol/drug impairment.  Additionally, the student will be able to recognize the categories of drugs inducing the observable signs of impairment.

Note:  This course will NOT qualify an officer to serve as a Drug Recognition Expert.

Who Should Attend:  Students should be a commissioned peace officer and/or prosecutor responsible for the detection, arrest, and prosecution of DWI drivers.

2025 Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) MSHP Law Enforcement Academy 02/18/2025 - 02/19/2025
Technical Programs - Basic Boat Operation Prerequisite:  This is a basic boat operation course so there are no prerequisites for this course.  Anyone born after January 1, 1984, is required to complete a boating safety course to operate a boat on Missouri's lakes prior to the state of the class.  Students must bring a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device to class, which will be worn during the practical portion of this course.

Course Description: This course is intended for students who have little to no boat operation experience.  Students will receive classroom instruction on boating operation fundamentals, basic mechanical issues, and boating nomenclature (4 hours).  The student will receive hands on training in backing trailers and launching boats.  They will also receive hands on training in proper boating operation fundamentals.  These fundamentals include properly trimming a boat motor, pulling alongside other boats or objects, and proper ferrying techniques.  Each student will be required to complete and pass three different courses of operation.  These courses of operation include a planning course, a backing course, and a slalom course.  Students will also be required to successfully pull alongside another vessel in moving water.  The practical portion of the course is 12 to 16 hours, depending on student abilities and the weather.

Who should attend:  Agencies who have acquired rescue style boats to use in performing their job function and who have limited access to training in using those craft.  This course is designed for firemen, DNR personnel, sheriff's departments, park rangers, and troopers who may be called upon to assist Water Patrol Division officers in search and rescue or body recovery.

Course Description:  This 48-hour POST course is designed as an introduction for law enforcement professionals assigned (permanently or temporarily) to an executive protection team.  The school is limited to 20 students.

The Basic Executive Protection School covers all aspects of performing executive protection details. The school teaches the guidelines and procedures for being a member of a protection unit, tactical formations, advance procedures, practical driving skills, firearm considerations, close quarters shooting techniques, threat assessments and executive protection medical considerations. The school involves various scenarios and participants should report with business attire suitable for public interactions as well as Class C (tactical uniform) or similar attire.

Additionally, this course provides students with one hour of POST training on handling persons with mental health and cognitive impairment issues, one hour of POST training on officer well-being including mental health awareness, and two hours of POST training on de-escalation techniques, crisis management, critical thinking and social intelligence.

Technical Programs - Blood Alcohol Content Type II - Intox DMT Prerequisite - MSHP members only

Course Description:  This course provides technical information about the physiology and pharmacology of alcohol, DHSS rules and regulations, Missouri statutory and case law regarding driving while intoxicated, and technical training on the Intoximeter DMT blood alcohol measurement instrument.  This training fulfills the DHSS requirements for a Type II permit for the Intox DMT, enabling the graduate to perform maintenance and make repairs to the Intox DMT breath analysis instrument.  The Type II graduate is also able to conduct Type III training courses (subject to approval from the DHSS).  

Who Should Attend:  Personnel assigned the duties of either departmental Intox DMT instrument maintenance or blood alcohol measurement compliance oversight (supervision of Type III permittees).

Technical Programs - Drug Recognition Expert Prerequisite:  Must have a minimum of three years experience as a law enforcement officer, and have a minimum of 36 career DWI arrests, or if less than 3 years experience, must have a minimum of 72 career DWI arrests.  The candidate must have attended an ARIDE training course within the last three years prior to applying.   Additionally, all DRE candidates must be proficient in administering standardized field sobriety tests (SFST), and active in DWI enforcement.  Candidates must provide a letter of support from their agency head or DRE coordinator and two recent driving while intoxicated reports, which have been adjudicated.

Course Description:  This very intense, advanced course is designed to enable participants to determine whether observed driver impairment is due to drug use other than alcohol, and if so, to identify the category or categories of drugs inducing the observable signs of impairment.  The curriculum involves a three-phase training process:

Phase I consists of a two-day (16-hour) preschool.  During this preschool, students become familiar with the techniques of the drug evaluation, and receive updated training on SFSTs.  Students also begin to learn the techniques and procedures for evaluating persons suspected of drug impairment.

Phase II is a seven-day (56-hour) classroom program, during which students receive detailed instruction in the techniques of the drug evaluation examination as well as in physiology, the effects of drugs, and legal considerations.  Upon completion of this phase of training, the student must pass a comprehensive written examination before proceeding to Phase III of training, the field certification.

The field certification portion of training follows completion of the classroom training. During this portion of the training, students, under the direction of certified instructors, evaluate subjects suspected of being impaired by drugs other than alcohol.  After participating in and documenting the results of at least twelve drug evaluations and completing a comprehensive examination, the student is certified as a Drug Recognition Expert.
NOTE:  Field certification nights will be held in additional to the 72 hours of classroom training.  These are mandatory, and scheduled at an out of state facility (pending site availability) for the following dates: March 10 - 17, 2024 in Philadelphia

Who Should Attend:  Officers who meet the prerequisite requirements, and voluntarily accept the responsibilities of a DRE, included call-outs, maintaining proper paperwork, and completing the minimum number of evaluations and training hours for recertification.

Technical Programs - Ice Rescue Refresher Prerequisite:  MSHP POST Certified Officers only.  
The student must have attended Ice Rescue and Swiftwater Rescue I AND have Swiftwater rescue gear currently issued to him/her.  This gear includes a dry suit, a Swiftwater-rated personal flotation device with a dive knife and strobe light, dive fins, water gloves (thick), wet boots with good soles, and two throw bags in good, serviceable condition.  The student is required to fill out a medical waiver and, if necessary, get a physician’s release to attend this course.  The student will be required to fill out and sign a “Liability Release and Express Assumption of Risk” form and “Statement of Understanding” form at the start of training.  The student must be able to tie the rescue knots used in Swiftwater Rescue I.  The student must be a strong swimmer and be able to swim in icy water while in Swiftwater gear.

Course Synopsis: This course refreshes the students the skills necessary to rescue people when ice or cold water is present.  This course will cover the following topics:  Elements of an Ice Rescue, Ice, Victim Assessment, Personnel and Equipment, and Developing an Operational Plan.  The practical portion of this course will be held off-site.  

Who should attend:  Members with waterways in their area that freeze, or could freeze, during the year.  

Course Cancellation Policy:  This course may be cancelled if there is no ice, or ice not conducive for training.  Students enrolled in a course that has been cancelled will be given preference to attend the course when it is rescheduled.

Technical Programs - Ice Rescue Training Prerequisite:  MSHP POST Certified Officers only.  

The student must have attended Swiftwater Rescue I AND have Swiftwater rescue gear currently issued to him/her.  This gear includes a dry suit, a Swiftwater-rated personal flotation device with a dive knife and strobe light, dive fins, water gloves (thick), wet boots with good soles, and two throw bags in good, serviceable condition.  The student is required to fill out a medical waiver and, if necessary, get a physician’s release to attend this course.  The student will be required to fill out and sign a “Liability Release and Express Assumption of Risk” form and “Statement of Understanding” form at the start of training.  The student must be able to tie the rescue knots used in Swiftwater Rescue I.  The student must be a strong swimmer and be able to swim in icy water while in Swiftwater gear.

Course Synopsis: This course teaches the students the skills necessary to rescue people when ice or cold water is present.  This course will cover the following topics:  Elements of an Ice Rescue, Ice, Victim Assessment, Personnel and Equipment, and Developing an Operational Plan.  The student will receive Ice Rescue certification through Dive Rescue International at the completion of this course.  The practical portion of this course will be held off-site.  

Who should attend:  Members with waterways in their area that freeze, or could freeze, during the year.  

Course Cancellation Policy:  This course may be cancelled if there is no ice, or ice not conducive for training.  Students enrolled in a course that has been cancelled will be given preference to attend the course when it is rescheduled.

Technical Programs - Marine Enforcement Prerequisite:  Any student born after January 1, 1984 MUST have successfully passed a Boaters Education course approved by NASBLA.  It is strongly recommended that everyone successfully pass a Boaters Education course approved by NASBLA prior to attending this course. The student should be able to swim 100 yards continuously and be able to tread water.  Students should be in good physical shape.  Must be a MSHP POST certified officer.

Course Synopsis:  This course will provide members with the basic skills and knowledge to perform the job of a Marine Operations Trooper.  This course is a prerequisite for the 40-day Marine Officer Training, which is required for members wishing to work as a Marine Operations Trooper.  This course will focus on laws specific to the waterways of the state, vessel accident investigation, and boat operation.  Students will also learn about Boating While Intoxicated investigation and be certified by NASBLA in Seated Battery.  Approximately half of the time spent in the course will be spent in the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Training Tank.  In the Training Tank, students will learn/refine their swimming skills, tread water (with weights), learn rescues/assists, and participate in a survival swimming course (with uniform and weighted gun belt).  To pass this course, students must pass written tests and the yearly Marine Operations swim test.

Who should attend:  Those interested in a position as a Marine Operations Trooper.

Technical Programs - Open Water Swimming Prerequisite: Students must be in excellent physical shape.  Students must be able to tread water for a minimum of 15 minute and swim 550 yards continuously.  Students will report to this training with a swim suit, goggles, and towel.  MSHP POST Certified Officers only.  

Course Synopsis: This course is designed to teach students the skills necessary to swim across, and navigate, open water.  To complete this course, the student will swim over a mile and be away from shore for over an hour.  When not swimming, the student will be treading water while remaining aware of their location and potential dangers.  The course will be conducted at Lake of the Ozarks in water of varying depths and limited water visibility.  Students should be prepared to encounter wind, wave action, vessels in the vicinity, buoys, and debris in the water.  Students who complete this course will leave the class with increased confidence in their ability to swim and navigate open water of varying depths.  

Who should attend: Any member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol who works on or around the water, especially those assigned to Marine Operations in a full-time or part-time capacity.

Technical Programs - Survival Swimming Prerequisite: The ability to float, tread water for 15 minutes continuously, swim 500 yards continuously.  MSHP POST Certified Officers only.

Course Synopsis: This course is designed to establish a basic understanding of officer survival on the water.  This class is designed to provide a basic framework of knowledge and skills to survive an unexpected immersion into the water or to disengage from a suspect.

Course Length: 2 Days (Monday 1000 hours to Tuesday at 1700 hours)

Technical Programs - Swiftwater Rescue Prerequisite:  The student must have successfully completed a basic boat operation course or have a signed waiver from their department head certifying that he/she is an experienced boat operator and has the boat operation skills necessary to operate a boat in extremely dangerous swiftwater conditions.  Agencies are reminded that anyone born after January 1, 1984, is required to have completed a boating safety course to operate a boat on Missouri's lakes.  The student must be a strong swimmer and be prepared to swim in a fast moving water.  The student must be able to jump from a height of 10 to 15 feet into swift water.   The student must furnish his/her own swiftwater rescue gear (a wet or dry suit, a swiftwater-rated personal floatation device, a swiftwater-rated helmet, dive fins, water gloves, wet boots with good soles, and two throw bags).  Students should be in excellent physical condition and will be required to fill out a medical waiver and, if necessary, get a physician’s release to attend this course.  The student is required to have a basic knowledge of rescue knots before attending this class.

Course description:  This course is designed to teach students the skills necessary to rescue persons in swiftwater conditions.  The course also teaches students the skills necessary to affect a self rescue if the rescuer becomes the victim.  Topics covered in this class include how to read the river, river hydraulics, rescue knots, self-rescue techniques, strainer drills, boat operation techniques, boat rescue techniques, throw bag techniques, team rescue drills, hi-line/z-line rescue techniques, rope gun fundamentals, ring buoy rescue techniques, and low head dam rescue techniques.  The student will receive Swiftwater Rescue I certification through Dive Rescue International at the completion of this course.  This course will be held off site.

Who should attend:  Officers/emergency personnel who are involved in swiftwater rescues during flooding events.

Cost:  $435 which includes the student packet and certification through Dive Rescue International.  Meals and lodging are at the expense of the student/agency.  

Tuition/Registration Fees:  Registration fees are due 7 business days prior to the start of the class, if not paid by that time the student will not be allowed to attend the course.  Forty-eight (48) hour notice of cancellation is required for full tuition refund.  Exceptions to the refund policy will be made at the discretion of the Director of Training.

Technical Programs - Swimming Stroke Development Prerequisite: The ability to float and swim 100 yards continuously.  MSHP POST Certified Officers only

Course Synopsis: This course is designed to define the following strokes: American Crawl (freestyle), Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, and Sidestroke.  We will work on proper timing and body movements that will allow the student to move more efficiently through the water.
