Brief Description
Tactical Countermeasures for SWAT or POU
Full Description
This block of instruction is for MSHP SWAT team members, Public Order Units and approved members of law enforcement tactical units. The curriculum for this instruction is based on 2023 updates to the existing MSHP Defensive Tactics Instructor Program curriculum and expands further to address the changes associated with conditions commonly faced when wearing full tactical gear. The students will identify and discuss key factors that operationally impact defensive tactics techniques in the field during tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving conditions. Students will demonstrate the necessary adjustments in multiple conditions (gear) and environments (external). Students will be required to perform teach backs from core blocks of this instruction. Students will consider the implications of new tactical methods using the "WIN" mindset while maintaining the objectively reasonable standard established by Graham v Connor. Heavy emphasis is placed on strategies and tactics used against walls, on cars, in doorways, and inside vehicles. Heavy emphasis is placed on distinguishing the difference between techniques that work in sport, self-defense, patrol and SWAT. This block of instruction requires intense physical participation while under stress and is not suitable for injured or unhealthy members of the agency.
